What is this exchange:

The 90s Channel: 90s Television Fic/Art Exchange is an exchange dedicated to the television of the 90s.

Eligible fandoms:

A television (live action or cartoon) show will be eligible if at least one episode aired originally in any country in the 90s (examples include due South which aired April 26, 1994 - March 14, 1999 as well as The West Wing which premiered September 1999). Shows in a language other than English which were released as dubbed into English versions in the 90s also count as an original release.

Reality based television shows, for example, Wheel of Fortune or MTV's The Real World are not eligible. Additionally, nominated eligible characters must be fictional or portraying a fictionalized version. Fictionalized historical versions of people are allowed. Cameos of celebrities, for example Brady Anderson in Sabrina the Teenage Witch are not eligible.

OVAs (original video animation) are not eligible due to the difficulty in finding airdates for them if they were ever aired at all.

If you have concerns about your character of choice, please email me at the exchange contact email (jean@hamsterbandit.com) or leave a comment on the nominations post.

The minimum wordcount is 1000 words. Art must be at least 500x500 pixels and if hand-drawn, drawn on unlined paper. Photosets, collages, and AI are not acceptable as art gifts and will not qualify as fulfilling your assignment. If you wish to create an unconventional work (Interactive fiction, vid, etc) please contact me and I'll check if your recipient would be happy with that as well as discussing what guidelines it will be interpreted under for completeness.

Matching:

Matching is 'or'. You will match on one medium (art or fic), one fandom, and one relationship field tag.

Nominating:

You will be allowed to nominate 1-4 fandoms, and 1-5 single characters/groups per fandom.

Both single character and group nominations are permitted. We will be using the relationship field, so the nomination format is such:

Fandom: Fandom Name
Solo: Character Name (Fandom)
Character 1/Character 2 (Fandom) - You may nominate up to 4 people in a group nomination (single characters only, for example no Rita Repulsa/Power Rangers). Use / for romantic/sexual relationships and & for gen or platonic relationships. If a group has named canonical characters you must use those existing named canonical characters and not offer or nominate oc versions. (Rupert Giles instead of 'Original Watcher or The Watchers' in Buffy)

Crossovers of eligible fandoms should be nominated under the fandom label Crossover Fandom and should be formatted as:

Fandom: Crossover Fandom
Character 1 (Fandom)/Character 2 (Fandom)

Eligible Fandoms for Crossovers: Each fandom you nominate as part of a crossover must be an eligible 90s television show. However, those characters or that show does not need to be nominated individually in the rest of the tagset. It may be nominated only in your crossover tag.

You are allowed to nominate groups including those without named individual members in this category as well as individual characters. So instead of Giles (Buffy)/Joe Dawson (Highlander) you may instead choose Watchers (Buffy) & Watchers (Highlander). You may not nominate more than 4 characters or groups in a single relationship tag.

Original characters and worldbuilding:

Original characters are not to be nominated but you are allowed to suggest them in your signup or letter.

Worldbuilding is allowed as a character tag nomination. It should be formatted as Solo: Worldbuilding (Fandom) - it is not allowed under Crossover Fandom. This is permissible for all fandoms and I will leave it up to the discretion of the nominators. You may find it best to apply this tag where there's more fantastical elements at play.

Anthology Shows: Shows such as Outer Limits and Tales from the Crypt featured self-contained stories in their episodes. Please nominate anthology shows as individual fandoms by episode using the format, Show: Episode Name. Example: Are You Afraid of the Dark?: The Tale of the Phantom Cab

Sign ups:

You may request the same fandom multiple times, but a gift is only guaranteed if your requests and offers each have 3 (requests) and 3 (offers) unique fandoms. Episodes of the same anthology only count as 1 fandom toward the 3 request and 3 offer minimum. Crossover Fandom only counts as 1 fandom toward the 3 request and 3 offer minimum.

Requests are 3-10 fandoms with 1-10 character tags, and Offers are 3-10 offers and 1-10 relationship field tags. You may choose 'any' for relationship tags in both sections. When you choose any, any specifies that you mean any tag nominated within the tagset, not any character or relationship in the fandom as a whole.

There is a box for prompts/optional details: Please put any of your 'DNWs'/Do Not Wants in this box. These are things that would ruin the story for you, such as major character death, eye trauma, etc. Do not use these to try to fence your creator in (IE no saying 'DNW: No Werewolf AU'). DNWs will only be enforced if they are here in your sign up and no other location.

There is a box for putting in a url to a letter: This is an optional bonus you can provide your creator with, where you go further into your likes and interests for your request, among other uses. Please make sure the url is publicly visible and the letter is complete by the time assignments go out. If it is on a site like tumblr, avoid changing your username and breaking the url. DNWs that are solely on the letter will not be enforced. This is, again, optional.

Except for the DNWs in the sign up and the tags requested, all details are optional for the creator to create.

Assignments:

Fics must be standalone and complete. Please do not denigrate yourself in the creator notes or promise future chapters or sequels.

Your fanwork does NOT need to focus only on the 90s era of the show; it can encompass any part of canon.

Pinch hits:

Pinch hits will be posted to the dreamwidth community, with comments screened. Please leave your AO3 username and the number of the pinch hit you're requesting to claim.

Defaults:

There is a default deadline (Sunday 14 May 2023 11:59PM CST). If you fail to default before this deadline you will not be allowed to participate in the next round. I encourage you to be realistic about your chances with your fanwork and to remember that there's no shame in defaulting. Exchanges are meant to be fun and not stressful and if the fic is causing you distress, it is encouraged to set it free to find a new Pinch Hitter as soon as possible.

If you have been defaulted on and your sign up is less than the minimum three unique fandoms, I will put you out to Pinch Hit, but will not delay the collection if you do not have a gift. You may contact me about adding more fandoms. (jean@hamsterbandit.com)

Treats:

Treats are allowed and encouraged. If you are interested in receiving treats, please make mention somewhere that gifts are allowed in your settings and check your preferences tab to be sure the "Allow anyone to gift me works" box is checked. (If your account is new, treating has been set to off automatically as part of an anti-harassment measure added by ao3). If you are opting into treats, note anything you might not like (some people do not like drabbles, some people do not like long fic, some people might accept art even if they only signed up for fic). Treats are not required to obey the minimum rules for an assignment, but must heed any DNWs.

Just giving you a heads-up that anon comments are disabled completely, since that doesn't seem to have been your intention.

Hi, I just wondering if made for TV movies that aired in the 1990s are eligible for this exchange? I was specifically thinking of nominating the Doctor Who TV movie from 1996.

This helps narrow down my nomination list! Will they be eligible for that 90s movie exchange you mentioned in a different thread?

Hello! I'm one of the mods of the prospective 90s movie exchange -- this is not an official mod decision but I think we'd be fine with most OVAs. We'd probably have to know the specifics before we could make a final decision, but anything that is a canon that stands alone (unrelated to an animated series) and more or less movie length (let's say 3-4 hours or shorter), would probably be fine, especially if it was ever released on dvd/vhs in the form of a single long story. Anything longer than that, or an OVA that is closely related to an ongoing tv series canon, we'd probably have to ask for more details before approving it.
